When I wanted to visit Uganda, I got in touch with Richard. I wanted to see the mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and other wildlife of Uganda. Richard designed a trip especially for me, totally in line with my wishes.
From The Netherlands I flew to Kigali, Rwanda and met Richard and our driver Jackson at the Rwanda-Uganda border. I stayed a few days in Kisoro, where I visited the local market, did a coffee tour and enjoyed an afternoon walking around Kisoro with Richard telling me all about his hometown. Then the day came for me to do the Gorilla tracking in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Although the hike was tough it was all worth it, it was so special to be around the gorilla family, watching their behavior, taking pictures and just looking at them. I still can’t believe how close I was to these magnificent animals!
The next day(s) we went on safari (by car as well as by boat) in the Queen Elizabeth National park, where I was excited to see so many animals, for example: hippo’s, elephants, lions and buffalo’s. A very special moment was the night that there were two hippo’s outside of the window of my room.
After this we went to the Kibale Forest National Park where I spent an amazing day with a family of chimpanzees, learning about their behavior during a habituation day. It was so memorable! From there we went to the Murchison Falls National Park to see the amazing Murchison Falls where the Nile squeezes into a 7 meter gorge dropping 40 meters. Impressive sights, I even saw rainbows!
In the Murchison Falls National Park I went on safari again and was very lucky to see a leopard resting in a tree, a mother lion with babies and meet my first giraffes in real life. Before we reached Kampala I got to see some rhinos with little babies in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Rhinos are instinct in the wild in Uganda but in this sanctuary people work hard to change that. And after an educational visit to the National Museum of Uganda in Kampala it was sadly already time to fly home.
Richard planned this all so well for me and he and Jackson were the best travel companions I could ask for. I spent twelve wonderful days with these two great guys in their awesome country. They made it so easy for me to do this trip alone. They took care of me, arranged great accommodations and told me everything I wanted to know about the nature and culture of the beautiful country of Uganda, its history and its lovely people!

I just returned from an incredibly moving 10 day trip to see the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, and I found so much more than gorillas! The people, the land, the food were all awesome.
